Abstract AITranslate

The permeation of organophosphate nerve agents (NAs) into equipment surfaces has posed a huge threat to military personnel considering their possible exposure risk. Here, a double-layer peelable coating (DLPC) was designed as a protective barrier on these substrate surfaces, and then the permeation behaviors of dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) simulant solutions as well as their influence on the mechanical properties of coatings were analyzed. The results revealed that the permeation breakthrough time of DMMP molecules across the DLPC sample was about 10 times (∼1700 min) longer than that of original monolayer peelable coating after exposure to 25 wt % DMMP solution; meanwhile, the peelability and flexibility could also be maintained well. With the increase of DMMP concentration (in an order of 50, 75, and 100 wt %), the permeation processes of DMMP molecules through the DLPC sample were found to be affected by the chemical similarity of coating-solution and physical mobility of DMMP molecules themselves, and these were elaborated from the aspects of solubility parameter comparison and DMMP-H2O interaction analysis, respectively. In addition, the sensitivity of the coating microstructure to the permeant also resulted in its mechanical property failure in different degrees, which exhibited a positive correlation with DMMP concentration. Whereas the tensile strength was further enhanced when these coatings were re-dried, and combined with the evolution of thermomechanical properties, this probably could be attributed to the antiplasticization effect caused by the crosslinking of residual DMMP and water molecules inside the coating with the polymer chains. It is expected that this designed DLPC can be used as a candidate material for resisting the permeation of NA solutions into the protected surfaces.
